Independence for Youth Program

Who is I.F.Y. for?

This program is for youth between 16 to 19 years of age or those residing at Cicada Place. It is designed to assist youths in making the transition to responsible adulthood through the learning of life skills. These youth may be supported by a government Ministry; family or self-supporting. The Program welcomes those youth who would like to broaden or improve their life skills.

The I.F.Y. coordinator is trained in youth services and is skilled in dealing with youth issues.

What does I.F.Y. offer?

Weekly Group Sessions

Weekly group sessions are provided with the focus on independence and responsibility. A variety of topics are covered, for example:

  • Nutrition / Food Preparation
  • Banking / Budgeting
  • Money Management
  • Tenancy Rights
  • Communication / Assertiveness
  • Interpersonal Relationships
  • Goal Setting / Career Planning
  • and more….

Counselling

The I.F.Y. coordinator is available to all I.F.Y. teens who are in emotional distress or are having trouble dealing with day to day functioning. More intensive and/or specialized counselling is available though a variety of local community agencies to which youth are assisted in gaining access to by the I.F.Y. coordinator.

Advocacy

The I.F.Y. coordinator is available to advocate on behalf of the youth in the program to see that the rights of the youth are upheld and that the best interests of the youth are served.

One-on-One Work

One-on-one work is available to youth who are unable to attend the weekly group meetings. The I.F.Y coordinator will cover all the life skills issues that are presented in the group meetings with youth on a one-to-one basis. The coordinator can also help with shopping, banking and locating suitable housing.

Housing

Cicada Place opened its doors on May 1, 1999. This eleven-unit building provides independent housing for 16-22 year olds who are participants in the Independence for Youth Program.
